Butchertown- Louisville, KY

One local writer sums up the passionate battle for parcel of real estate known in Louisville's downtown as Butchertown when he writes, "Butchertown has been pulled in two radically different directions recently. One side wants to make it a nicer place for tourists and its own residents, while the other is more concerned about protecting the noxious-smelling Swift meat plant."

The area contained by Main Street, Mellwood Ave., I-65, and the Ohio River is known for being in the center of commerce and life for Louisville residents. Butchering is still a big part of the area and it still houses The Swift Meat Plant which employs as many as 1400 people.   Meat used to be shipped down the Ohio River and Butchertown was a great location for businesses to spring up surrounding the industry.  Animals in the 1800's and early 1900's were even more critical to citizens than they are today and many people capitalized on the abundance of their bi-products being in close proximity to large slaughterhouses.  The streets in Butchertown were lined with two and three story brick homes, many of which still stand today.  Though the original people to settle in the area were not wealthy, their lifestyles were better than many due to the lucrative meat market in early days.  At one point, the entire area was zoned industrial and this began a battle that still continues today between Butchertown homeowners and business owners.

Today, the area has had vital renovations to its streets and homes.  There are currently many condo developments popping up in the area.   And there are still a variety of historic homes that have recently become a popular choice as market conditions have made Louisville's eastern expansion slow down.    Also, new boutiques and bars are popping up on Main Street and Market as residents in the area want more dining and shopping options, which should bring increase home values.  One of the biggest attractions to Butchertown is Louisville's renovated Waterfront Park.  If you are considering buying in the area, please search for homes here.   Also, if you have any questions regarding purchasing a home anywhere in the Louisville area please contact The Vince Carter Team with your questions.  We would be happy to assist you in the buying process.
